Built for Speed
The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – along with the Speedtail’s suspension (among other things) make this a profound machine built for speed. The V-8 provides just 70 percent of the McLaren Speedtail's motive power, the rest coming from an axial flux electric motor fed by the most power-dense battery ever fitted to any road car.
High-Tech Everything
In the high-tech, everything Speedtail is more digital than the original F1s. The electrical adjustable steering wheel, paddles, and digital dash are right in front of you. A screen that controls the phone and the Bowers & Wilkins audio system is just to the right; to the left is a screen for the navigation and climate.
Expect Drama
The overall length of the Speedtail has been increased by 23.3 inches, mostly behind the rear wheels thanks to a dramatic taper of the tail.
In the Name of Airflow
The front wheels of the McLaren Speedtail have fixed carbon-fiber covers to optimize the airflow along the bodysides. The wheelbase has been extended 2.3 inches.
A Special Car
Only 106 examples will be built, with about a third of them going to the U.S. market. Why 106? That's the number of F1s McLaren sold between 1992 and 1998. Used examples of the F1 now can command up to $20 million.
